The petroglyph signature of
Crazy Horse, Tashunka Witko
June 1876
The only known signature of Sioux leader Crazy Horse, was carved by him
as a petroglyph on a sandstone cliff below the forks of Reno Creek in
eastern Montana at the time of the Battle of Little Big Horn in June 1876.
This pictograph was photographed by Glenn Sweem of Sheridan, Wyoming in
the 1960's when it was located for him by John Stands in Timber, historian
of the Cheyenne Tribe. The petroglyph depicts a horse with a lightning
bold on its hip below a snake, symbolizing "Crazy Horse". The
petroglyph has since been destroyed as a result of weathering and vandalism.
