I'm a non-smoker and non drug-user. Been there, and these days
I
prefer a clear mind. I'll tell you my story. I was born into
a troubled
family, and one of my problems was illiteracy. I am dyslexic,
and
I've had some help in putting this page together. I've been
in prison
for nearly half my life now, and I've spent a lot of that time
learning
to read and write. I'm pretty good at it now, and I'll be starting
my
GED in the next two months. How did I end up in prison, though?
So many prisoners say they are innocent of the crime. I've met
a few
who were telling the truth. I am one of them. I was found guilty
of a
double murder, and the ones who testified against me were my
girlfriend, who was herself being held as a suspect, and the
little girl
who witnessed the murders. My girlfriend got free by speaking
against me, but it's the little girl's testimony which shows
how poor
the case against me was. She was only seven years old, and must
have been terrified by what she saw. All she could remember
was
that the murderer was very dark, or black, and that he was wearing
a gold ring on his finger. I am half-white, and especially pale
in the
Wintertime, and had no gold ring at that time. Being illiterate,
and
having no money to employ a lawyer, I found it impossible in
the
early days to do anything to help myself out of this injustice.
I have
spent years and years fighting to get free, but without success.
My
faith lies in the Great Spirit, whom I pray to in the sweat-lodge
here
at the prison. So I am looking for two things. First, since
I can read
and write now, I love to get letters from out there in the free
world.
If you write to me, I will write back. I can offer straightforward
friendship, and if you are interested in spiritual matters,
that's even
better. Second, I am also looking for funds, in the hope that
I will
one day collect enough to get a lawyer. American Express or
postal
checks are OK with the prison. But nobody is obligated to do
that.
I'm happy with just friendship. If you write to me, please don't
